What is Androgenic alopecia or male hair loss?
Androgenic alopecia is known as hereditary male pattern baldness. It is most common form of male hair loss , but it can affect women too. Hereditary hair loss is passed down just as much from the father's side of the family as the mother's side and could in some cases skip a generation.

Men with Androgenic alopecia typically have lower levels of total testosterone, higher levels of unbound/free testosterone, and higher levels of total free androgens including DHT. 5-alpha-reductase is responsible for converting free testosterone into DHT.

Cause of Androgenic alopecia or hair loss
When excessive DHT is present in the scalp and over sensitiveness of the hair follicles is hereditary, they reduce the growing period of hair. The hair follicle becomes weaker and weaker due to its sensitiveness to DHT. A bald person does not have less hair follicle in comparison with a person with full hair growth. The growing period of his hair is shortened hence his hair is very thin and falls prematurely.

Frontal hair loss starts and hair line starts receding. Bald patches appear on the hairline in “M” shape and/or on the crown of the head. Baldness spreads all over the head except both sides and the back. With women hair becomes thin and the parting line becomes visible.

This form of hair loss is on increase in younger women and men. With women the hair loss may also occur after pregnancy or menopause and by some types of contraceptive pills.
